Test first: Texas Commercial Rules
In Texas you take the Texas Commercial Rules test first. It covers the Texas-only rules in section 14 of the Texas CDL handbook. You need 80% to pass. Then you take General Knowledge, Combination Vehicles and Air Brakes for a Class A permit.
New in 2026: since June 1, 2026, Texas gives all CDL knowledge tests in English only, and interpreters are not allowed. This is a Texas rule: some other states still offer Spanish. If English is your second language, practice with the real wording now — not on test day.
